Charcoal 
Charcoal has long been celebrated for its purifying skin care benefits, especially when it comes to managing oily skin and blemishes. The charcoal in our Optimals Purifying Clay Face Mask is made from a very hard wood by way of a special burning technique. When the wood is burned, it forms micro pores on the surface of the charcoal particle, increasing the surface area. Higher surface area gives the charcoal its high adsorption power, which means that it can attract, trap, and adsorb (i.e. hold on to) other molecules. As such, the charcoal acts much like a magnet, drawing out and capturing impurities such as dirt, excess oil, or general daily grime from the surface of the skin – leaving skin looking and feeling purified and comfortable. 
Astringent Agents from White Nettle 
White Nettle Extract has long been used for its many medicinal benefits – in fact, the first use dates all the way back to the Middle Ages! The astringent agents in the mask come from saponosides in White Nettle, which have been shown to have astringent and decongesting benefits, and help to soothe, protect, and rebalance oily, blemish-prone skin. White Nettle is also rich in antioxidant compounds, including phenols, flavonoids, and tannins – not to mention its skin-soothing, microcirculation-boosting effects, that were used to promote a comfortable, even skin tone.

Salicylic acid is a recognised ally in the fight against blemishes and an excellent ally for clear, healthy skin. It is a BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid), exfoliating, smoothing and cleansing the skin of dead cells. Being oil-soluble means that salicylic acid can reach deep into the pore, cutting through sebum (oil) and clearing away pore-clogging debris that can cause blemishes to develop. 

A powerful moisturising ingredient, shea butter is a natural pearl-coloured fat extracted from the fruit of the shea tree in Africa, where it has been used as a moisturising ingredient for the skin as well as in cooking for thousands of years. This unctuous butter is now an essential ingredient in cosmetics, thanks to its rich and intensely nourishing texture that is particularly compatible with our skin. In cold climates such as Sweden, shea butter's exceptionally moisturising and repairing qualities are highly appreciated.

White nettle is rich in antioxidant compounds that confer anti-inflammatory properties, making it a soothing ingredient in beauty and facial care. The wild plant also has astringent and decongestant properties, which are very beneficial for re-balancing acne-prone skin. A good source of vitamin A, white nettle is edible and, unlike green stinging nettle, the young leaves can be eaten raw in salads.

White Willow bark has been used in medicine for thousands of years, dating back to ancient Egypt, where willow was used to treat pain and inflammatory conditions such as headaches, fever, toothache and back pain. In facial care, white willow bark is an incredibly soothing and purifying ingredient thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial compounds.
